108 Al-Kawthar in the translation by Mustafa Khattab (The Clear Quran)
1 Indeed, We have granted you ˹O Prophet˺ abundant goodness.
2 So pray and sacrifice to your Lord ˹alone˺.
3 Only the one who hates you is truly cut off ˹from any goodness˺.
What are some signs someone only loves you for superficial reasons? If they treat you well when life is going well for you but poorly when life is not going well, this can be an indication. Also, if they are willing to tolerate abuse from you because all they care about is what they’re gaining at the end of the day, this can be another indication. Loving material items is different from loving who you get these items from. In other words, someone can love your hands while despising your heart and that is not love.
Love is when external circumstances do not change your ability to see a person for who they really are and accept them with admiration—when the presence of material gain or the lack thereof doesn’t change your disposition towards them. Loving someone includes patience in bad times, enjoyment in good times, but compassion and consideration at all times. Love is loyalty. Love is reliability. Love is peace. Love is fulfillment.
